A pharmacist with three decades of healthcare experience stumbled upon the forbidden cannabis plant and its healing properties upon searching for therapeutic options in the field of integrative medicine. The founder’s interest in cannabis grew like weed, thus Canna-Hemp was born in 2019 in Mauritius. Its emblem inspired by her daughters features the cannabigerol molecule – the mother of the key cannabinoids CBD and THC. Through Canna-Hemp, the founder is determined to enable patient access and improve lives, shaping medical cannabis legislation and implementation. Our bodies have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is the most important physiologic system in the body enabling homeostasis or balance. The ECS is present in almost every organ in the body including the brain and is made up of receptors and endocannabinoids which are cannabinoids that our body produces. Phytocannabinoids from plants can mimic our endocannabinoids and nudge the system back into balance which is why cannabis-based medicine can help so many diseased states.
Safety and quality are priorities in cannabis-based medicine. Cannabis is a bio-remediator, it removes pollutants like heavy metals from contaminated soil. While this is a good thing to purify the soil, it may be harmful to use oil derived from these products for medicinal purposes. Cannabis products can also be contaminated with microbes and pesticides which can be harmful to health if consumed. Therefore, traceability is particularly important for cannabis-based medicine. Canna-Hemp believes in transparency with the certificate of analysis of the product which should be tested with a third-party laboratory to assure customers of the safety and content of the cannabis-based products.
Cannabis contains 545 compounds including 104 cannabinoids, 150+ terpenes, and flavonoids. Many of these compounds work together much like orchestral music with different instruments and notes. This is known as the entourage effect and is beneficial for the therapeutic use of cannabis-based medicine. Therefore, broad-spectrum extracts of the cannabis flower may be more efficacious than isolates or synthetic cannabinoids.
Cannabis taken for recreational purposes generally contains high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) responsible for the intoxication. THC has some abuse liability (although lower than alcohol). Cannabis-based medicine is usually quality controlled, may contain THC as well as CBD and other cannabinoids, and is taken in lower doses, for therapeutic purposes not for euphoric effect. Hemp is the name given to cannabis plants containing <0.3% THC.
Cannabis-based medicine (CBM) is botanical with many active compounds that impact many different receptors in the body and may be used for many different conditions. It is unlike pharmaceuticals that are generally single-molecule, single-target, with studies that indicate a generalizable dose for a particular condition. CBM effects depend on the compounds present in the medicine, as well as the individual consuming it. The state of the endocannabinoid system in the patient as well as genetic and metabolism factors will determine the ideal dose and individualized therapy is optimal. Start low and increase the dose every 2 days until benefit is obtained, known in CBM as the “sweet spot”. Higher doses are not always better in CBM.
